Caves and basalt: Barranco Hondo hike
A 5–6 hour hike through a caves and basalt canyon in Tenerife. Age 12+, easy–moderate.
Hiking in Tenerife is not one trail. This list mixes Anaga’s laurel forest, ravines in the Teno massif (including Masca), a Teide summit or half day in the park, and easier coast or badland walks such as Rambla de Castro, Güímar or Chinyero.
Most are guided, from half a day to a full day. This page compares 24 bookable options (from €30 on a recent list; about 45 minutes to 8 hours). Pick zone and effort before you open a listing: Chamorga is not the same preparation as the peak, and Masca is not a stroll in La Orotava.
This page compares 24 bookable options. Lowest listed price: €30. Time on the activity runs 45 min–8 h. Meeting points include Barranco Hondo, Norte and Rambla de Castro. The closed price and the meeting point are on each activity page.
None of these have a location on the map. Try other filters or look at the list.
Anaga, in the northeast, is wet forest and long days: Chamorga (about 8 h on the page), Taborno (about 6 h), Cruz del Carmen–Chinamada–Punta del Hidalgo (about 5 h), cave-house or laurel interpretive walks (about 4–6 h). Best if you want green forest, possible mist and little beach sun. The ground is slippery after rain.
Teno, in the northwest, is Masca, Baracán, Teno Alto, Monte del Agua and ravines such as Albarderos. Some routes stay on ridges; others drop into the gorge. Full Masca and Masca/Baracán pages take a good part of the morning (about 4–5 h typical on this list). If you only want Masca, also open the dedicated listing at /tenerife/senderismo/; here you compare that trip with the rest of Teno and other zones.
Mount Teide is a different permit and pace: summit (with or without cable car by page; some summit pages run about 5–6 h with high list prices) or a half day in the park (for example La Fortaleza, about 5 h, or Volcanic Experience, about 3 h). Do not book it as if it were an Anaga stroll.
Outside the three massifs: Rambla de Castro (north coast, about 5–6 h), Barranco Hondo, Lerito in La Orotava (about 4 h), Güímar badlands and Chinyero. Use them if you do not want a summit or an 8-hour day.
Anaga: mist and humidity are part of the plan; after rain, mud wins. Teno and Masca: heat and sun in summer; start early. Teide: cold, wind and, in winter, snow or closures; summit permit and cable car follow official rules (Tenerife ON / Park). We do not invent permit quotas or fees here.
Coast and badlands are steadier if you avoid midday in August. An early start helps when the meeting point is far from the hotel (Anaga from the south is a full driving day). Do not stack the Teide summit and Chamorga on the same day.
Mountain or trail shoes with grip, water (more than you think in Teno or Teide), a wind layer, sun protection, a snack and, in Anaga, a light waterproof. Poles help on long descents (Masca, Chamorga).
Level: pages run from easy (Lerito, some coastal) to 6–8 hour days with real elevation. Elevation, when stated, is on the page. Read hours and minimum age before the price: from €30 on the list does not mean an easy stroll.
With children, favour shorter routes or a low minimum age (for example Lerito from age 8 on a recent list; others ask for 12, 13 or 16). Full Masca and Chamorga are not a first family trekking day. Guided trips on this list run with a guide; the terrain still decides: if a trail closes, rebook.
Permits and official trail alerts: check Tenerife ON or Cabildo for quotas and closures. An MMG booking does not replace a summit permit when the activity requires one.
Treating this hub and the Masca listing (/tenerife/senderismo/) as the same URL. Booking the Teide summit as a walk without checking permit, cable car and fitness. Choosing by the photo, not the zone (Anaga is not a short drive from Adeje).
Ignoring the hours: 45 minutes versus 8 hours are not the same booking. Arriving on the dot after crossing the island. Assuming from €30 applies to Masca or the summit: the final price is on each page.
One Anaga or Teno day is enough; leave the south beach for another day. A Teide half day can sit with a soft north-coast afternoon if you sleep nearby; from the south, give it a dedicated day. Coast (Rambla de Castro) fits if you are already in Puerto de la Cruz.
For water on the same trip, open /tenerife/actividades-acuaticas/; do not pair an 8-hour Chamorga with kayak the same afternoon. Same activity on another island: /gran-canaria/senderismo/.
Anaga: laurel forest, villages, possible mist. About 4–8 h. From about €30–50 on zone pages (confirm). Moderate to hard. Best for forest and a long day.
Teno / Masca: northwest ravines and ridges. About 4–6 h typical. Price on the page (several from about €70; Masca also on its dedicated listing). Moderate to hard. Best for cliffs and gorge.
Teide (summit or park): lava, altitude, different permit. About 45 minutes to 6 h by page. Summit: high list prices; park or half day: see page. Moderate to very hard on the summit. Best for Spain’s high point or geology.
Coast / badlands / Chinyero: Rambla de Castro, Güímar, Chinyero, Lerito. About 3–6 h. From about €30–70 by page. Easy to moderate. Best without a summit day.
